We sometimes indulge in foods that we know are bad for us, like chips or sweets, then try to make up for it by eating healthy the next day. We are the ones who pay for our (poor) food choices, but for pets who totally depend on us for what they eat, our decisions regarding what goes into their body could make them sick or even kill them.

Some foods that can be good or tasty for humans can be toxic to animals. The next time you are tempted to give your dog a piece of something from your plate when they look longingly at your lunch, keep in mind that just one bite could harm them.

Here are some foods you should not feed your dog.

Chocolate

New dog owners are often warned of the dangers of feeding their pet this sweet treat. That’s because ingesting chocolate is one of the most common causes of poisoning in dogs.

Two components found in it that can be dangerous to dogs are caffeine and theobromine. Even just a small amount can cause cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, seizures, and coma.

Coffee

Coffee is another human staple that dogs should avoid. Dogs are more sensitive to caffeine than people are, and consuming even just a small amount can lead to caffeine poisoning, especially for smaller dogs.

Avocado

Avocados are known to be a source of nutrition for humans, but eating them can cause serious health problems for dogs because they contain persin, a fungicidal toxin. If consumed in large amounts, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or heart attacks.

Garlic and onions

These cooking staples can be dangerous to your pet because they are part of a group of plants called alliums, which also include chives and leeks. All the parts of these plants are poisonous to dogs, and can cause damage to their red blood cells and lead to anemia.

Grapes and raisins

Fruits are good for humans, but in the case of grapes, they can be toxic to dogs. Grape toxicity was found by some veterinarians to be caused by tartaric acid.

Eating grapes, raisins, or sultanas can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney damage or failure.

If you accidentally feed your dog any of these foods or they somehow find a way to eat them, call your veterinarian immediately.
