What promise did Donald Trump make about the war between Russia and Ukraine in the debate against Biden?

The candidates have been sparring on a number of issues with little push-back from the moderators, one of which is foreign policy.

All eyes in America are glued to the CNN debate between the prospective candidates for the 2024 election, incumbent president Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump.

One topic that garnered particular reaction from the pair was foreign policy. Co-host Jake Tapper asked if Russian President Vladimir Putin’s terms to end the war in Ukraine are acceptable. Putin had demanded that Ukrainian forces leave the entire regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia and that these territories be declared Russian by international agreement.

In his rambling answer, Trump promised to end the Ukraine war in the short time he would have as president-elect. He took the time to attack Biden, saying the war, in his opinion, would not have started if he was president. As a counter-factual, it is impossible to say if this would have happened.

When finally answering the question directly, Trump said he would not agree to the terms set out by Vladimir Putin.

“No, they’re not acceptable,” Trump said.
