Update:

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has confirmed that the downtown curfew will remain in effect for several more days. The measure was first implemented on Tuesday night in response to unrest and protests sparked by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in the area.

“My hope is that after a few more days of this, people will understand that we’re serious,” Bass said during a press conference on Thursday. However, she did not provide a specific end date for the curfew. The mayor previously stated that the decision was made after more than 20 businesses were looted and vandalized.

When does the curfew start and end in Los Angeles?

The curfew is in effect from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. PT. It covers a one-square-mile area of downtown Los Angeles, stretching from the 5 Freeway to the 110, and from the 10 Freeway up to where it intersects with the 110 and 5.

Who is exempt from the curfew?

According to McDonnell, the following groups are exempt from the downtown curfew:

  • Residents living within the designated area
  • Unhoused individuals
  • Accredited members of the media
  • Public safety and emergency personnel.

On the third night of the curfew, the LAPD’s Central Division reported that bricks, chunks of concrete, and fireworks were thrown into the crowd. “Less-lethal munitions have been authorized. These can cause pain and discomfort,” the LAPD said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Videos have been circulating online of journalists, protestors, and passersby being hit with rubber bullets at very close proximity to the police.
