On Tuesday, voters in Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Texas, Utah, and Wisconsin will take to the polls. In an off-year election, turnout is typically lower, but in many states, essential races for governor, positions on the state’s supreme court, and referendums on abortion could motivate voters to cast a ballot.

House and Gubernatorial races

There will be two House races this month: one in Rhode Island’s 1st congressional district and another in Utah’s 2nd. However, the race in Utah won’t take place until November 21, 2023.

Kentucky and Mississippi are holding gubernatorial elections, with the incumbents in both states looking to win a second term. Democrat Andy Bashear in Kentucky faces off against the state’s former Attorney General, Daniel Cameron. While the last two senate races in Kentucky have been won by the Republican incumbents, the current polling shows the two candidates are in a dead heat.

Down in Mississippi, Republican Tate Reeve is expected to defeat Democratic challenger Brandon Presley.

The upcoming race in Kentucky will be a crucial test for Democrats. In the previous year, voters in the state rejected a referendum that proposed to restrict abortion rights. This provides some hope that the state is not as deeply conservative as its support for Donald Trump in the 2016 and 2020 elections may suggest. However, ensuring that voters turn out to vote will be essential in retaining the governorship. With an unpopular president and an off-year election, this may pose a challenge.

Important referendums taking place on 7 November

In Maine, New York, and Ohio, referendums will take place on critical issues.

Maine voters have the choice to establish a public power company which would provide citizens with greater control over their utilities.

In Ohio, voters will decide on two key issues: whether to amend the state constitution to protect the right to abortion, and whether to legalize recreational marijuana.

Texan voters will be presented with fourteen constitutional amendments to vote on, among which are Proposition 3 - which seeks to prevent the state from introducing a wealth tax instead of an income tax - and Proposition 9 - which seeks to allow the state to provide a cost-of-living adjustment to retired teachers in the state.

The ballot measures serve as indicators of where voters stand on various issues in conservative and moderate states. Although the results may not be applicable to the entire US population, they hold significance as data points for both parties in shaping their 2024 strategies. It is a way to take a pulse on the political landscape and understand the current sentiments of voters.
