Which US major cities are having a Gay Pride Parade 2022?
With cities disregarding pandemic restrictions, expect pride of the scale seen before the pandemic as cities gear up for a month of festivities.
Pride Month began on 1 June, beginning the celebration of LGBTQ+ freedoms.
The fight for equal rights and representation of LGBTQ+ people around the world continues and Pride Month reflects the ongoing struggle. In a recent example, the US Charges d’Affaires in Kuwait, James Holtsnider, was summoned by the Kuwaiti government after a tweet from the US Embassy in Kuwait tweeted a picture of a pride flag.
Pride celebrations began in New York more than 50 years ago and has blossomed into a global event in nations across the world. Here is a list of some of the biggest events in the US this June.
New York City
After two years on the sidelines, NYC pride is back, baby.
The NYC Pride March will begin at midday on June 26th from 25th Street and 5th Avenue.
Chicago
After a breaks in 2020 and 2021 due to the covid-19 pandemic, Chicago will be once again hosting its festival. Pride in Chicago culminates with the parade which will take place on the last Sunday of June, which will be June 26.
The Pride festival takes place along North Halsted St. in the North Side neighborhood referred to as ‘Boystown’ the weekend prior to the parade.
San Francisco
Dubbed by its official website as “the largest gathering of LGBT people and allies in the nation”, San Francisco’s pride events will be the last full weekend at the end of June.
The parade will be on Sunday morning beginning at Beale Street along Market and ends at Market and 8th St.
Los Angeles
LA will be hosting its pride parade much earlier, on June 12. As the first permitted gay parade in the world in 1970, many will be excited after missing the 50th anniversary in 2020 due to covid-19.
Twin Cities
The 50th annual Twin Cities Pride Festival will be held at Loring Park in Minneapolis June 25 to 26, 2022.
The Parade will start at 7th Street & HennepinAvenue, proceeding down Hennepin Avenue to Spruce and then into Loring Park.
Boston
Boston will not be having a pride parade for 2022. The Boston Pride group was dissolved in 2021 and no other group has taken up the mantle.
“There will be plenty of events this summer, but it sounds like we’re a little ways away from having an organization fully set up to be able to take on the scale,” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said.
Denver
Denver pride is on Sunday, June 26 beginning at 9:30 am. It will span 14 blocks of Colfax Avenue from Cheesman Park to the Civic Center.
Atlanta
Atlanta pride expects over 300,000 attendees over the weekend, however the event is hosted in October.
Saint Louis
Like many of the other weekends, Saint Louis pride will be hosted on the weekend of June 25-26. There will be plenty of events over the month besides.
