Who is Camila Cabello, the new coach on The Voice 2022?
Season 22 of ‘The Voice’ will be taking on a new coach to take the place of Kelly Clarkson as she takes time off. So who is her replacement, Camila Cabello?
‘The Voice’ is back for a new season after taking a hiatus last year. Long-time coach on the show, Kelly Clarkson, decided that she needed a little more time from the rigors of the music competition, so Camila Cabello was brought in.
After the Season 22 debut, it appears that Camila will be up to the challenge of following in the footsteps of Kelly who had four historic wins, including with Girl Named Tom last season, the first group win.
Camila Cabello is no stranger to singing competitions
Born in Cuba, Camila got her big break on ‘The X-Factor’ as part of the popular girl ban Fifth Harmony in 2012 when they came in second place. She was just 15 at the time and the group would go on to have several hits until she went her own way four years later.
“It feels very full-circle, because I also started on the singing competition show,” Camila, 25, explained on Monday’s premiere of ‘The Voice’ avoiding speaking the name of the competing show on air. That produced a light moment with fellow coaches as they ventured guesses at which show that was exactly, all dancing around mentioning Simon Cowell’s show on Fox.
She’s no stranger to ‘The Voice’ either. Camila was a mentor to John Legend’s team during the competition last season. He returned to sit in the red swiveling chairs again this season along with other ‘The Voice’ veteran coaches Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, who are married to each other.
As for her chances of winning in her rookie season. “I feel like I’m the underdog this season. But the underdog fights harder and smarter,” she said. “Watch out for team Camila!”
Successful solo singing and acting career
After venturing out on her own, Camila had a number of successful collaborations with artists such as Shawn Mendes, Machine Gun Kelly and Young Thug, their song ‘Havana’ hit Number 1 in 23 countries, including the UK and US. She put out her first solo studio album ‘Camila’ in 2018. Her Latin music-influenced album reached No 1 on the US Billboard 200.
Since, she has collaborated with other artists like Ed Sheeran, Cardi B, Pharrell Williams and Alejandro Sanz, their song ‘Mi Persona Favorita’ went on to win a Latin Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Best Pop Song in 2019. To date, she has released three studio albums.
Camila’s acting debut came in 2021, starring in Amazon Prime’s musical version of ‘Cinderella’. While the movie got knocked for its “frenetic silliness and uneven tone” those were “unfortunate distractions from the genuine pleasures of the film,” according to RogerEbert.com. Among those was “Cabello’s appealing performance as Cinderella, and the creative and energetic musical numbers.”
