Who is Renata Rojas? The Mexican diver who visited the Titanic shipwreck

After what happened with the Titan submersible, some have been reminded of the time that Rojas managed to reach the Titanic remains.

México

Renata Rojas went down in history, after becoming one of the first Mexicans to reach the remains of the Titanic, traveling on the Titan, years before the submersible disappeared and days later the death of the five crew members was confirmed, due to a “catastrophic implosion”.

Here we tell you a little more about her story, and how her passion to learn about what happened to the ship began, which led her to embark on the journey of her life.

Renata Rojas and her dream to see the Titanic remains

In an interview she gave to ‘Exploring By The Seat Of Your Pants,’ in 2022, the Mexican diver shared her experience, and how the fascination she has for the sea, which dates back to her childhood, was born.

“Mexico in general is a beautiful place to dive, every coast, not just Cabo San Lucas, the Yucatan peninsula, is beautiful, everywhere you go you see whales, mantas, small and big fish, seals, sea lions and everything you can imagine,” she said.

Renata has extensive experience diving in various parts of the world, which is why her maritime experience is enormous. In addition, she said that she has always been hugely curiosity about shipwrecks, especially the Titanic.

To continue with her dream, Rojas studied at the Woods Holem Oceanographic Institution in New Jersey, and began collecting objects related to the famous liner, with a very clear objective.

“I wanted to go looking for her, I wanted to be the person who found her,” she said. “To go on an expedition, I wanted to know more about the subject; I read everything I could, I saw everything I could.”

Rojas visits the Titanic remains

In 2017 Rojas discovered OceanGate Expeditions, the company that is dedicated to undertaking trips to the remains of the Titanic, although she had to suspend her planned trip, around the time of the covid-19 pandemic. In 2022 she resumed these plans and it was in July that she was finally able to fulfill that dream. At that time she was accompanied by Alan Estrada, the well-known influencer who is dedicated to making travel content.

“Dreams can come true! Privilege to see Titanic with my own eyes on July 19th 2022,″ she wrote in a post. “First Mexican woman down and for the Royal Canadian Geographical Society Flag.”
