Who is who in The Rings of Power series?

We take a look at the cast of Amazon Prime’s new Tolkien-inspired show as old and new characters come together in the most expensive series in television history.

Amazon paid a whopping $250 million for the rights to J. R. R. Tolkien’s iconic fantasy novels, by far the biggest ever TV rights deal, and are thought to have poured another $200 million into the production.

The events of The Rings of Power take place roughly 5,000 years before the story told in The Lord of the Rings books begins, so many of the characters are different. With everyone enjoying The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, we felt it necessary to bring you a glossary of characters involved in the new story.

Arondir

Ismael Cruz Córdova stars as Arondir, a new character introduced for the series. He is a Wood Elf, but his casting has caused controversy among some Tolkien fans. But we think that the Puerto Rican actor is perfect for the role and that the only thing that should concern us, after seeing the first episodes, is how he is going to solve his forbidden love for a human mortal.

Bronwyn

Bronwyn, played by Nazanin Boniadi, is the human with whom the dark-skinned, light-eyed elf falls in love. How with this classic true love tragedy play out? Only time will tell.

Celebrimbor

The world of video games sneaks into Middle-earth with this character played by Charles Edwards. Celebrimbor is known to Tolkien readers but gamers who played Shadow of Mordor will be particularly conscious.

Disa

The dwarf princess Disa, played by Sophia Nomvete, is Durin’s wife and one of the characters that has sparked controversy online. A strong female character with a forceful personality and a good heart, Disa speaks her mind to build bridges between her curmudgeonly husband and Elrond.

Durin IV

Owain Arthur plays Prince Durin IV, the son of Durin III, King of the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm. Despite the years of prosperity in the Second Age, he now hides in the mountains where the dwarves live and work.

Elendil

Lloyd Owen plays Elendil, Isildur’s father. He is a friend of the elves and allies himself with their kind in the fight against Sauron.

Elrond

Robert Aramayo takes over from Hugo Weaving, who played Elrond in Peter Jackson’s classic trilogy. Half elf, half man, and Arwen’s future father, Elrond can always be found guarding Rivendell. He is a great friend of Galadriel and will likely play a key role in the plot of The Rings of Power.

The Stranger

Daniel Weyman plays the mysterious role of The Stranger, a moniker given to a seemingly celestial being who appears from the sky. After his crash-landing on earth he is rescued by Nori and Poppy who pull him out of the crater.

Galadriel

Another charceter to appear in both the film and television series is Galadriel, with Morfydd Clark taking over from the silver screen’s Cate Blanchett. The brave elf appears first as a young girl, but ends up traveling the world to find the murderer of her brother, Sauron.

Gil-galad

Benjamin Walker plays High King Gil-galad, a character who commands respect in The Rings of Power. In charge of the kingdom of Lindon, his role here is more relevant than in Jackson’s work, where he only appeared briefly.

Halbrand

Charlie Vickers stars as Halbrand, a character created just for this television adaptation. He accidentally meets Galadriel when the two of them are cast away and he could bring important revelations as the series develops.

Isildur

One charcter lifted straight from Tolkien’s work is Isildur, played by Maxim Baldry. Although he was the founder of Gondor and cut off Sauron’s ring-bearing finger, he appears initially as a simple sailor, oblivious to the seismic events that await him.

Largo

Dylan Smith plays Largo Brandyfoot, Nori’s long-suffering father who knows how unpredictable his crazy and curious daughter is.

Miriel

Cynthia Addai-Robinson plays the Queen Regent of Numeror, the land that will later be the birthplace of Aragorn, Boromir and Faramir. In one of the trailers she can be seen speaking to Galadriel and leading Numeror’s cavalry into battle, so expect big things from her in the future.

Nori

One of the most central characters in the series is Nori. She is played by Markella Kavenagh and is thought to be the great ancestors of the Hobbits, living a nomadic life. Despite their mistrust of the outside world, Nori dreams of knowing what lies beyond the sunset.

Person from Rhûn

Another great mystery is a traveller from Rhûn, who appeared in a teaser trailer and triggered wild rumours on the internet. All we know for certain, however, is that the character played by Bridie Sisson appears from the lands of Rhûn, a place that enjoys the favor of Sauron.

Poppy

The lively Poppy (Megan Richards) is close friends with the crazy Nori and gets into trouble with her inseparable companion. Poppy is the calmer head, but still becomes entwined with her chaotic bestie.

Sadok Burrows

Lenny Henry plays Sadoc Burrows, an astrologer with great standing in his local community. It is his star-gazing that first alerts the characters of impending trouble.

Sauron

The nemesis of not only this series but the broader Lord of the Rings storyline too. The evil lord, despite only making a brief appearance in the first episode, brings with him a sense of foreboding that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

Theo

Theo (Tyroe Muhafidin) is the son of Bronwyn. The audience is not initially aware of who his father is, but at one point we are introduced to the boy hiding near to a broken sword with the throbbing symbol of Sauron engraved on its hilt. Did it belong to his father? Another clue for LOTR fans to ponder.
