Why could Donald Trump be indicted in Georgia?

The list of former president Donald Trump’s legal troubles continues to grow.

This time a prosecutor from Georgia is expected to push for a grand jury indictment this month in relation to efforts by Trump and some other Republicans to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Why could Donald Trump be indicted in Georgia?

The indictment is the culmination of an investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis which she began conducting more than two years ago. The probe was spurred by an audio recording of a phone call placed by Trump to Georgia’s secretary of state, which was first released by The Washington Post. According to the audio, the former president was pressuring Georgia officials to overturn the outcome of the election which he had lost.

Trump’s legal team had been attempting to have Willis prohibited from continuing her investigation, and was pushing for the dismissal of the findings of a special grand jury that was seated to assist the probe. However, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney rejected their petition, mostly because an indictment has not yet taken place.

The Georgia Supreme Court had already denied a separate bid by Trump to stop the inquiry of Willis.

Donald Trump: First president to face criminal charges

The possible indictment by a grand jury in Georgia is the latest in a series of legal battles for Trump. In March 2024, he is scheduled to go to trial in New York to face allegations in connection with hush money payments made to porn actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. He will also head to trial in May for federal charges involving his reported mishandling of classified documents in his Mar-a-Lago residence.
