Why is the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee?

Milwaukee, the deepest blue city in Wisconsin, is known for its strong Democratic leanings. With 79% of its voters supporting President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, it’s no surprise that many locals are scratching their heads about why the Republican National Convention is being held there this coming week. This comes at the same time that Chicago, less than 100 miles from here, plays host to President Biden and the Democratic National Convention next month. So why?

Swing state importance drives Wisconsin focus

While local business owners in the city, particularly those running restaurants, bars, and venues, were hopeful for an economic boost from the RNC, the anticipated flood of reservations has yet to materialise. And some residents, given their political feeling, aren’t too happy about the decision, but Milwaukee’s selection as the host city underscores Wisconsin’s strategic importance in national politics. It’s is a crucial battleground state, one of the few that can swing either way in presidential elections. The state was part of the so-called “blue wall” that Democrats relied on until Donald Trump’s narrow victory in 2016. Biden managed to flip the state back in 2020, making Wisconsin a key target for both parties this year.

Republicans believe that holding their convention in Milwaukee will energise their base. While the city itself is a Democratic fortress, the surrounding suburbs are more politically diverse and have become battlegrounds in their own right. Historically, these suburbs were reliably red, but since 2016, Democrats have made significant inroads, particularly among suburban women who have increasingly distanced themselves from Trump and the broader conservative agenda.

Given, however, it will be Trump’s first appearance since Saturday’s failed assassination attempt on the former president, the reaction of undecided voters will be closely monitored.
