Will the Blood Moon be visible in your state? This is the weather forecast for the Total Lunar Eclipse
Here’s your best chance to catch the first lunar eclipse of 2025, also sometimes called a blood moon.

This week, the first lunar eclipse of the year will light up the night sky, beginning on the evening of March 13 and continuing into the early morning hours of March 14.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves into Earth’s shadow, which is cast by the sun. Because sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere before reaching the moon, it may take on a reddish hue, leading to the nickname “blood moon.”
When will the eclipse begin?
In North America, the eclipse will start just before midnight (ET). According to Space.com, the partial phase, when the moon begins to turn red, will begin around 1:00 AM ET. The event will reach its most spectacular moment—totality—at approximately 2:20 AM ET.
Do you need protective glasses?
No. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to view with the naked eye—no protective eyewear is needed.
