The Social Security Administration (SSA) issues millions of monthly payments to its beneficiaries, most of whom are retired workers or people with some type of disability. The latter usually fall into the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment scheme.

What is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

Unlike regular benefits for retired workers, SSI offers financial assistance from the federal government to adults over age 65 and individuals with certain disabilities, regardless of age, who have limited resources or income.

SSI benefits should not be confused with those of Social Security Disability Insurance. SSDI is intended to offer economic support to individuals with a qualified work history who, due to some permanent disability, cannot continue working and therefore cannot reach retirement age. SSI beneficiaries can receive payments even without having worked.

How much are SSI payments?

The specific amount varies depending on the personal situation of each beneficiary. However, SSA estimates indicate that with the 3.2% COLA increase, average payments in 2024 for SSI beneficiaries increased from $914 to $943 for individuals and from $1,371 to $1,415 for couples who file their taxes together. For more information on amounts, visit the official SSA website.

Complete SSI payment schedule in May: Who will receive two checks?

The distribution of Social Security payments is linked to the beneficiaries’ date of birth. However, this distribution only applies to retired workers. SSI beneficiaries, and those who retired before May 1997, receive the money during the first days of the month, regardless of their date of birth.

In the event that a beneficiary receives both Social Security benefits; that is, they are retired and also receive SSI payments, the SSA will prioritize sending the SSI on the first day of the month, followed by the regular benefit on the third day.

If the payment date falls on a weekend or holiday, the distribution will be brought forward to the previous business day, so there will be months when SSI beneficiaries will receive two payments. This is the case for the month May. This is how the payments for this month are distributed:

  • Wednesday, 1 May: SSI beneficiaries
  • Friday, the 31st: SSI beneficiaries (payment corresponding to June)

As for the rest of the month’s payments for retired workers, the calendar is as follows:

  • Friday, the 3rd: Beneficiaries who began receiving their payments before May 1997
  • Wednesday, the 8th: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 1st and the 10th
  • Wednesday, the 15th: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 11th and the 20th
  • Wednesday, the 22nd: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 21st and the 31st
