The Social Security Administration will send an advance payment on December 24. Find out if you will be one of the beneficiaries.
Every month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends money to millions of beneficiaries, including retirees, survivors, and those receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Social Security payments for December continue to be sent out, meaning millions of people will receive their money before the end of the year. Some of these beneficiaries are eligible for an advance payment on December 24.
SSA sends advance payments on Christmas Eve
In 2024, the average payment to retired workers was just over $1,900, although the exact amount depends on each beneficiary.
For December payments, the SSA has already sent out SSI payments and payments for beneficiaries who began receiving their payments before May 1997.
Additionally, on Wednesday, December 11, the SSA sent payments to beneficiaries with birth dates between the 1st and the 10th, while on December 18, it sent payments to beneficiaries with birth dates between the 11th and the 20th.
On the other hand, the SSA will send an advance payment starting December 24 for beneficiaries with birth dates between the 21st and 31st. The payment is sent one day earlier since Wednesday, December 25, is a federal holiday.
The last payment for December will be sent on Tuesday, December 31. On this day, the SSA will send the payment to SSI beneficiaries for January 2025. The shipment will be advanced because January 1 is an official holiday.
How the 2025 COLA will impact payments next year
Thanks to the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), Social Security benefit amounts will rise by 2.5 percent next year. Here’s what average payments will look like in 2025, according to the SSA:
Additionally, the federal maximum monthly amount for SSI will increase from $967 for an eligible individual, $1,450 for an eligible couple, and $484 for an essential person.
On the other hand, although they are not related to the increase in the COLA, the maximum amounts that a retiree can receive will be the following in 2025:
The amount sent depends on each beneficiary, as Social Security payments are calculated individually. To get a rough estimate, add 2.5% to your current benefits. The SSA will notify beneficiaries of their new amount by mail or through their mySocialSecurity account.
