The most expensive kicks ever were sold at auction for $1.472 million at Sotheby’s in 2021. The red and white Jordans, designed by Bruce Kilgore, were bought by collector Nick Fiorella, are the earliest-known match-worn shoes in existence.
“To present such a groundbreaking and important pair of sneakers at this special auction in Las Vegas further solidifies the strength and broad reach of the sneaker collecting community,” said Brahm Wachter, head of Sotheby’s streetwear and modern collectibles department.
However, despite the prices still being huge when it comes to reselling Nike shoes, the prices across the range have indeed dropped over the past few years, with a flooded market the reason for the dip.
Nike and Adidas have moved away from a model of scarcity and are instead looking to please those fashion fans who could not get their hands on previously exclusive pairs, a move that has seen the resellers lose out having previously thrived on the thrill of the chase.
