PS VR2 for PS5 confirms controllers, features and more
Sony details PlayStation VR2 and its controllers, technology, and a whole host of additional features, but we are still far from a release date.
PlayStation is off to a strong start to the year. Through the platform's official blog, Sony Interactive Entertainment has detailed the features of its new virtual reality system, whose official name will be PlayStation VR2. Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President, has revealed that the controller will be called PSVR VR2 Sense controller. The device for the PS5 will offer a straightforward installation system, so it will connect with a single USB-C cable to the console.
“PlayStation VR2 takes VR gaming to a whole new level, enabling a greater sense of presence and allowing players to escape into game worlds like never before,” wrote Nishino. “With the headset on and controllers in hand, players will feel a heightened range of sensations unlike any other – thanks to the creativity of the game worlds being built by our world class developers, and the latest technology incorporated into the hardware.”
Main features
The new technology offers a visual experience in 4K HDR, with a 110-degree field of view and foveated rendering (uses eye-tracking to vary the resolution depending on what we are looking at). It introduces an OLED display and a resolution of 2000x2040 for each eye, with a refresh rate ranging from 90 to 120Hz.
As for the headset, PS VR2 detects the controllers via the four cameras embedded in the helmets, so unlike PlayStation VR, no external camera will be needed. The sensors combine eye-tracking, 3D Audio and Headset Feedback, a new feature "that amplifies the sensations of in-game actions from the player". The controls have tactile elements: for example, players can feel the character's racing pulse during tense moments or sense the rapid passage of objects near the head.
Another feature that has been implemented is one of the novelties of PlayStation 5, that is, the Tempest 3D AudioTech. On the other hand, PS VR2 detects the movement of your eyes, so a simple movement in a particular direction can generate reactions in the character.
“This allows players to interact more intuitively in new and lifelike ways.” Sony will not neglect haptic technology and adaptive triggers, also present in PS5's DualSense.
PSVR2 has no release date.
