PS VR 2 is the “next VR boom” indies have been waiting for

Shuhei Yoshida, Head of PlayStation Indies and a key man in the company, speaks out about PS VR 2 as the virtual reality boom we've been waiting for.

PS VR 2 is the “next VR boom” indies have been waiting for

President of Sony Worldwide Studios between 2008 and 2019, Shuhei Yoshida is a key figure in this industry without whom the PlayStation brand would not be understood today. That's why whenever Yoshida speaks the only thing left to do is to shut up and listen. The new statements from the current head of the PlayStation Independent Developer Initiative have to do with PS VR 2 and are going to get a lot of people excited.

"There are big games like Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Resident Evil Village and yes, they’re amazing, but it’s the indies, in my mind, that really take the risk because they want to make games on VR," Yoshida stated in an interview with Games Industry. "Indies have been waiting for this next VR boom," (alluding to PS VR 2). As an example, Yoshida cites "Mizuguchi-san", the author of Rez, Lumines and Tetris Effect, who also declared a few days ago that he was "very interested" in Sony's new device.

PS VR 2 will not be backward compatible

Sony's new glasses may be a boom, but they won't be backward compatible. This is the latest news we have had about the device, which still has a date and price to be announced, although it is expected in early 2023, so it will not take long. In any case, it won't be because of the games. Jim Ryan, CEO of PlayStation, said so about the peripheral and assured that the company is preparing "more than 20 games" for the launch.

"Right now, there is a considerable amount of money being spent on partnerships with independent and other third-party developers to secure a considerable pipeline of attractive VR content at the launch of PlayStation VR2. That energy, that effort and that money will continue to grow as the installed base of PlayStation VR 2 headsets grows also."
