Emotional reunion as Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd meet at Comic Con
Neither Parkinson's or the passage of time could prevent the Back to the Future actors (Doc and Marty McFly) from meeting at Comic Con in New York.
It's not the first time they've reunited in public, but that doesn't mean we don't get excited every time they do as Back to the Future is one of those movies that left a mark on so many peoples lives. Christopher Lloyd is still a national treasure at the age of 83 years old, and Michael J. Fox continues to set an example and proudly defy Parkinson's disease at every event he attends. And it was precisely that disease that was one of the many topics that both actors discussed on the occasion of their meeting at Comic Con 2022 in New York.
"Parkinson's is a gift that never stops asking you for more, but it's still a gift and I wouldn't trade it for anything. It has taught me to appreciate that people like Chris will always be there for me, as will many of you here who have also been there for me. It's not about what I have, it's about what it has allowed me to do: raise my voice to help people," explained the actor, referring to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, the organization with which he has helped research and fight the disease since he was diagnosed in 1991 at the age of 29.
Back to the Future chemistry
Now 61, Michael J. Fox says that "the best thing about Back to the Future was working with Chris" and recalls that the experience was "a lot of fun because Lloyd is a genius". In turn, Lloyd himself shared anecdotes with the audience on how he experienced those tumultuous days in 1985 when Fox was brought on set to replace the troubled Eric Stoltz. "I didn't know Michael except through word of mouth and when it was announced to me I thought I wasn't going to be able to do it. I had barely made it through the first six weeks of shooting..... Did I really have to start all over again? But then one of those little miracles happened and there was immediate chemistry."
Both individuals hailed the theater version of Back to the Future: The Musical, fresh from London's West End and destined for Broadway in 2023. "They could have fallen into the trap of imitating us, but they've made the characters their own," Fox explained. "They've kept Doc's key characteristics, though, which is that he makes boring explanations brilliantly entertaining. At the time, I thought they were going to wipe me off the screen.
To end the evening, the timeless Doc and Marty McFly said goodbye with their favorite movie line. Fox quoted Dr. Strangelove: "You can't fight in here, this is the war room!", and Lloyd capped off the proceedings with, "It was once said in a movie: the future is what you make it."
