Naughty Dog’s next game will be more “like a TV show”
Neil Druckmann has revealed the kind of perspective that has taken over Naughty Dog’s next project, which will be written by several other people besides himself.
Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, has shared a small note about the focus that is being taken with the studio’s next project. As part of a profile on The New Yorker, he said that it’ll be “structured more like a TV show” than anything else Naughty Dog had made
Druckman revealed that for this video game he’s not written the script by himself or with a single partner, but that he’s created a “writer’s room” where several people have given form to the story they all want to narrate together. These words are a little bit surprising coming from the creator, since we didn’t expect to learn a single detail about their next game before the end of 2022.
What’s next for Naughty Dog?
Over in the Naughty Dog horizon you can only see the multiplayer focused title based on the The Last of Us universe for now, which still doesn’t have an official name. We learned of it during the Summer Game Fest 2022 show, from Neil Druckmann himself. The director and creator climbed up on stage to show the project’s first piece of concept art, where you can see two characters wielding weapons in front of a changing environment.
We know it’ll have a strong narrative component that’ll tell a new story in the same universe, which means we’ll see new characters taking part in the action. A job offering posted about a year before the reveal, back in September of 2021, pointed at this project as something “ambitious” amongst the team, which would be an “evolution” of the multiplayer mode in the first title of the series.
Just a few weeks ago, in October 2022, another posting mentioned the possibility of the title having free to play features, meaning it might have become a free game with microtransactions inside of it.
