2023
The most anticipated strategy games of 2023
We look at some of the most talked-about names in strategy and management that are scheduled to be published in 2023.
Every year there are enough reasons to qualify strategy as a genre that never goes out of style. Whether from major developers or the independent scene, the most prolific aspects add up to an annual catalog with which to spend busy managing your troops. Therefore, we look at some of the big names coming in 2023 that promise large doses of action.
Company of Heroes 3
No less than a decade separates us from the release of Company of Heroes 2. Relic is now back with an installment that covers more World War II scenarios. Users will find different campaigns that will offer several perspectives that are not only argumentative but also playable. The Italian narrative arc will offer a Total War-style view of the territory, making decisions and moving troops around the country; when engaging in combat, the vision zooms in to put the surrounding area in detail. North Africa, on the other hand, is business as usual: non-stop combat scenarios where your true strategic ability is put to the test, not to mention multiplayer. A version for next-generation consoles is confirmed later in the year.
Fire Emblem Engage
Nintendo Switch will be fortunate to receive a new installment of the Fire Emblem franchise during its commercial stage. After the renowned Three Houses, its developers mold a more traditional experience in Fire Emblem Engage, without relying heavily on the social elements already seen in the academy of the last installment. Of course, you will have a multitude of alternative tasks in the Somniel, a meeting point in which to develop those who form your unit. Tactical combat and character-to-character progression on combat boards designed to the millimeter are back.
Jagged Alliance 3
Another strategy classic will return sometime in 2023... if all goes well. Jagged Alliance 3 will take veterans and newcomers through turn-based combat as you command a series of mercenaries with distinct personalities. Your duty will be to decide the fate of Grand Chien, "a nation of rich natural resources and deep political divides." By capturing areas you will be able to train the locals in order to gain muscle in the following combat scenarios. The possibility of playing the campaign in cooperative mode through the network is included.
Builders of Egypt
We want to dedicate a spot to city management simulators with one of the most promising ones on the horizon. Builders of Egypt lets you build your own Egyptian city in the middle of the Nile Valley. You will have to manage the population both economically and socially in order to create a prosperous city from the birth of Ancient Egypt to the death of Cleopatra VII. And as it is expected, to deal with war times choosing between peace or warlike conflict.
Manor Lords
Slavic Magic's proposal is similar to that of Builders of Egypt, only that here the war part is taken into account. As a medieval lord, you must give stability and a prosperous future to your village in 14th century France, where you promise "prioritizes historical accuracy wherever possible." Collect resources, construct buildings based on your needs and prepare the population to take to the battlefields as a pure RTS. In addition, they are looking for the outcome of the fighting to have an immediate impact on your village. "Each fallen soldier represents a lost person from your city," the developers point out. This can trigger an economic crisis or take more drastic measures that completely change your game.
Minecraft Legends
In recent years it has become clear that Minecraft's popularity allows it to cover other genre proposals far from the survival game seen in the original. That's why Minecraft Legends will take the popular license to the strategy to deal with the enemy hordes that come out of the portals to another world. Few details are known about the project, except that you will face the usual characters and rivals as units to lead against the forces of evil. Mojang itself makes it clear that this is "a real-time strategy and action game." It is clear that its adaptation to control will mark its formula, as more agile than usual.
Dune Spice Wars
Shiro Games took the popular license to the 4X strategy format. You'll be able to lead the factions of the Arrakis universe through the deserts that distinguish Frank Herbert's work. Dune Spice Wars is a special case on the list, as you can play it right now thanks to its inclusion in Steam's early access program, where it arrived on April 22, 2022. The studio pointed out at the time that it would take "between 9 and 12 months" to publish version 1.0, so we are just a few months away from seeing in all its splendor what they aim to achieve. We are talking about a 4X in real time where you must take into account both exploration, in order to obtain resources for your faction, and the defense of your positions in a war conflict that is always latent.
War Hospital
Brave Lamb Studio bets on a different perspective within management. War Hospital puts us in the shoes of Henry Wells, a combat doctor who does his part in World War I to treat the wounded on the French front. You will have to manage the few personnel and resources at your disposal while trying to give hope to the soldiers who have lost everything. You must choose carefully at all times through choices that will mark your next steps, all while seeing “the real conditions in a British field hospital”.
