Greninja in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: how to face it and how to catch it
Full screen

Greninja, a Pokémon introduced in Generation 6, makes its debut in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, appearing in a 7-Star Tera Raid with the Poison Tera Type. This Pokémon Scarlet & Violet guide will tell you how to join the raid and defeat the 7-Star Greninja.

How to participate in 6 and 7 Star Tera Raids in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet? Requirements

In order to take part in 6 and 7 Stars Tera Raids in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, we must first have completed the following:

  1. We must have completed the main story, which ends with the final fight in Area Zero.
  2. After this, we must complete the postgame content, which culminates in winning the Academy Ace Tournament. This unlocks the 5 and 6 Star Tera Raids in our game.
  3. Upon completing a total of 10 Tera Raids of 4 Stars or more, Jacq will call us to tell us that Black Crystals have started to appear in Paldea, which are those of the 6 and 7 Star Tera Raids.

Of course, there is a simpler option than all this, and that is that a player who has completed everything in the list above invites us to the Greninja Tera Raid by sharing a Link Code. Ask your friends, maybe someone has it available and can invite you. And remember that to force the game to be updated with the latest Tera Raids events, we must go to PokéPortal > Mystery Gift > Receive news from the Poképortal.

Where to find Greninja's 7-Star Tera Raid in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

The Black Crystal corresponding to Greninja's 7-Star Tera Raid can appear randomly in our game at any point on the map. Therefore, we will have to look carefully to see if it has appeared or not. It is a shiny black Poison Type icon that looks like this:

We can also go directly to its Tera Raid from the PokéPortal > Tera Raids. Here we select Greninja's silhouette:

We can also join Greninja's Tera Raid from the Tera Raid menu on the PokéPortal.

What move set does 7-Star Greninja use in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

How do you defeat 7-Star Poison Tera-Type Greninja in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

The perfect Pokémon to take on Greninja is Slowbro, the evolution of Slowpoke. Its usual strategy also works against Greninja. It can be caught in the following habitats:

This is what we need before starting:

  • Have a Slowbro at level 100 with IVs at max, and EVs at max HP and Special Attack (252 HP, 252 Special Attack and 4 Defense).
  • Its Tera-type must be Psychic.
  • Its Ability does not matter.
  • As an equipped item, Leftovers. This item allows you to recover some HP each turn. One unit can be found on the ground in Medali, in a corner of the central square, next to two food stalls. It can also be purchased from Delibird Presents in Cascarrafa.
  • Its type must be Bold. If your Pokémon does not have this Nature, you can change it with a Bold Mint, which you can buy at the Chansey Apothecaries for 20,000 Pokédollars. In Mesagoza, there is one in the main square.
  • The move set should be Slack Off, Nasty Plot, Stored Power, and Iron Defense.
  • Slack Off is a move that Slowbro can remember if it doesn't already have it.
  • Stored Power is TM 041. It can be found in the mountains southwest of Los Platos.
  • Nasty Plot is TM 140. It can be found in Area Zero on a cliff just behind Observation Unit 2.
  • Iron Defense is TM 104. We can find it south of Zapapico by going along the wall of the Great Crater of Paldea.

If we have all the above requirements, it is quite possible to defeat Poison Tera-Type Greninja 7-Star Poison Tera-Type even when playing alone. The strategy to follow is as follows:

  • We use Nasty Plot and Iron Defense to increase the Special Attack and Defense to the maximum (6 levels). We start with Iron Defense to increase the Defense and thus reduce the damage that Greninja inflicts on us with the only Super Effective attack against Slowbro: Night Slash. We have to cast Nasty Plot three times and another three times Iron Defense to do massive damage to Greninja with Stored Power; this attack is more powerful the higher the level-up accumulations in our attributes.
  • If our health drops too low, we use Slack Off to heal ourselves. Between this move and the HP we recover with Leftovers each turn, we shouldn't die.
  • It is possible that Greninja uses Double Team to increase his Evasion; here we depend on luck so that he doesn't get too many of them for our Stored Power to hit.
  • We also depend on luck when it comes to Greninja not canceling our characteristics. However, if we manage to get three Nasty Plot and three Iron Defense, the power of Stored Power will be brutal.
  • If Greninja resists three Stored Power and is still standing, we Teracrystallize (assuming our Slowbro's Tera type is Psychic), which further increases the damage of Stored Power.

What are the rewards for defeating Greninja in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

The first reward is the most obvious: a Poison Tera-Type Greninja that comes with the Mightiest Mark to commemorate our feat. It is also level 100 and comes with the moves Gunk Shot, Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, and Night Slash, as well as the Protean Ability, maximum IVs, and minimum EVs, so we can upgrade it as we please. Of course, we can only get one of these Greninja per game.

Of course, we also have a variety of rewards in the form of many L and XL Rare Candies, Treasures such as Nuggets and Star Piece, an Ability Patch (which allows you to change a Pokémon's Ability to a different one), upgrade items such as Fuel, the TM 091 Toxic Spikes, and many Poison Tera Shards.

Finally, there's the matter of having Greninja and his entire line of Pokémon in Scarlet & Violet, as they're not otherwise available in those games. Greninja can have offspring; by using Picnics and having it on your team with some compatible Pokémon (Ditto, we're looking at you), we have the possibility of getting Froakie Eggs, which can eventually evolve into Frogadier and Greninja.
