Elden Ring continues to hit it big: 20 million units sold in first year

FromSoftware's title hits a major sales milestone and shows why it was named Game of the Year in 2023.

Update:
Elden Ring continues to hit it big: 20 million units sold in first year

Edlen Ring's footprint has been impressive since before its release, and the results it has shown throughout the year have left no doubt as to why it has become one of the most special titles of 2023. Now, almost a year after its release, Bandai Namco has announced that From Software's title has reached a major milestone in sales, reaching 20 million units worldwide.

Most awarded title of the year

While the number of units sold may not be an indicator of which game should win an award, the genre in which it is placed has shown that FromSoftware's Soulslike games have moved completely out of the niche to become titles that more and more people are willing to try. Elden Ring's open world helped expand the market and introduce a new formula to the series, leading to Hidetaka Miyazaki's work taking home the coveted Game of the Year 2023 at The Game Awards.

Of course, that wasn't the only award Elden Ring took home, as at the beginning of this year, it had already surpassed a staggering 331 Game of the Year awards, surpassing the 322 won by The Last of Us Part II in 2020.

FromSoftware's future

At the moment, everything indicates that Elden Ring will remain as it is. While there was a surprise DLC that activated the Colosseums in the Lands Between, no further details have been given that the world of Elden Ring will be expanded, either in story, bosses, or new ways to die.

For now, FromSoftware is focusing on Armored Core 6. The title was presented during The Game Awards, and it's a classic franchise that the studio hasn't touched in 12 years and represents a break from the Soulslike genre. Although there are not many details about this title, we know that it will be available sometime in 2023.
