Update:
Naughty Dog had planned for a prequel to The Last of Us starring Ellie’s mother

We’ve had weeks full of news about The Last of Us, and the train won’t stop. In the heat of the HBO series, which has already aired its first complete season, the director of the video game and one of those responsible for the lore, Neil Druckmann, has participated in numerous interviews. Speaking to Kinda Funny Games, the also co-president of Naughty Dog has revealed that they worked on a prequel focused on Anna, Ellie’s mother.

Neil Druckmann's words may contain spoilers for episode 9 of The Last of Us on HBO.

A game not developed by Naughty Dog

"There was a more full version of this story that went more back in time, that was going to be made into a video game." In any case, the studio was not going to be responsible for the project, as Druckmann himself pointed out. “Not by Naughty Dog, but a different game studio. Greg Miller [of Kinda Funny Games] introduced me to that studio, we had talked to them for quite a while to do this thing and then it didn’t quite work out.”

Ashley Johnson plays Ellie in The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part 2 video games. The actress also took part in the cast of the HBO series, in a role that has finally been revealed. Johnson put herself in the shoes of Ellie’s mother, a story that viewers have finally been able to experience.

Will there be a The Last of Us Part 3? In the same interview, Druckmann assured that the studio is aware of the player's desire for a new game: "All I can say is that look, we’re already into our next project, so the decision has already been made". Without revealing anything, he did stress that they have considered various options, but they have selected the one that they were most "excited for".
