Akira Toriyama's Sand Land will be an anime movie and already has a theatrical release date

The new anime adaptation of the Dragon Ball creator's work confirms its release in Japanese theaters later this year, pending its western release date.

Update:
Akira Toriyama's Sand Land will be an anime movie and already has a theatrical release date

Sand Land, the anime based on the manga by Akira Toriyama, creator of such influential works as Dragon Ball or Dr. Slump, confirms its theatrical release. The studio has announced the release date in Japanese theaters for August 18, 2023, so Japanese fans of Toriyama and his work will have one more reason to rejoice while waiting for the return of the Dragon Ball Super anime. This is what ScreenRant reports after echoing the publication of its creators. A date that also coincides with the World Water Day, an essential element in the story of Sand Land. So far, there has yet to be a release date for Sand Land in the West.

Akira Toriyama's Sand Land headed to theaters

For those who don't know Sand Land, Toriyama published a short story 20 years ago in a post-apocalyptic world where water and natural resources are scarce and true treasures. Now, and after the first and enigmatic trailer a few months ago, it is finally confirmed that Sand Land will be an anime movie released in theaters; at least in Japanese theaters, as it has not yet been confirmed if it will reach the West through that distribution channel or directly in streaming or home format.

Full screen

The Sand Land anime movie is backed by big names like Sunrise, Kamikaze Douga and Anima -with the support of Bandai Namco Entertainment-, resulting in a CGI-based adaptation that, to the surprise of many, fits Toriyama's style quite well. And to warm up the atmosphere, the studio has shared the posters of its main characters, with Sheriff Rao with the demon Thief and Beelzebub, son of the King of Demons.

Sand Land will be released in Japan on August 18, 2023; when and how will it come to the West? Hopefully, we'll know the answer soon.
