10 years later, The Sims 4 attracted over 15 million players last year

The Sims 4 continues to say “Sool-Sool” (or hello to those who don’t speak Simlish) to new users.

September 2024 was a very special month for The Sims 4, as the game celebrated 10 years since its launch, and it looks like the game will continue to add content with a series of expansions and packs. And looking at the number of new users over the last year, it’s clear to see the strength that the recent changes have had on the title.

As part of EA’s Q2 earnings, the company announced that the game has gained a total of 15 million new users over the past year. This is a significant number when you consider that The Sims 4 took nearly four years to reach 20 million users. The difference can be attributed to the change in business model, when the game became a free-to-play title in 2022. This change increased the title’s user base by 31 million, reaching a total of 85 million by May 2024.

The future of The Sims, with changes on the horizon

On September 17, Electronic Arts announced the future of the franchise and some of the changes to come. From the signing of a movie with Amazon MGM Studios, directed by Kate Herron and co-written by Briony Redman, to the announcement of The Sims Creator Program, which will allow collaboration with “both established and up-and-coming creators around the world” to get early access to help create content. But the most surprising news was that Project Rene was not about the long-awaited The Sims 5, but a project “focused on building ways for friends to meet, connect, and share while playing together in an all-new world”.

It is also expected that there will not be a The Sims 5 as such, but that the way in which a new numbered installment within the franchise is not a replacement for the previous one will be re-evaluated.
