‘28 Years Later’ director’s plan to bring back Cillian Murphy as Jim
Danny Boyle has shared with Cinemania what he has in store for the new trilogy.

In ‘28 Years Later’, Danny Boyle, director of the films ‘Trainspotting’ and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, returns to transport us to the post-apocalyptic world he conceived with screenwriter Alex Garland in the 2002 cult film ‘28 Days Later’. Despite being one of the most anticipated releases of the summer, fans of the original film have missed the Oscar-winning Cillian Murphy, whose career took off thanks to his starring role in the feature film. Boyle has reassured fans with these statements that anticipate a new participation of the actor in the franchise.

‘28 Years Later’, a trilogy connected to ‘28 Days Later’
‘28 Years Later’ marks the beginning of a trilogy of independent stories set against the backdrop of the massive spread of a lethal variant of rabies in the UK. The director has explained the common thread linking the new characters to the first film, hinting that Murphy will appear in the third installment.
“The end of the first film is linked by Jack O’Connell’s character as Jimmy, no Cillian, Cillian is Jim. This is Jimmy and he has a bunch of followers called the Jimmies. So it’s very confusing deliberately. In the second film, they are going with Ralph Fiennes as Kelson. And at the end of that film, you meet Cillian who plays the original Jim from the very first movie. He’s the link into the third movie, which will very much be Cillian’s movie,“ clarified Boyle, who also revealed that the ‘Peaky Blinders’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ actor has been involved in the project as an executive producer and that ”he’s part of the architecture of the film.”
The second film in the trilogy, ‘The Bone Temple’, directed by Nia DaCosta, was shot simultaneously with ‘28 Days Later’ and will hit U.S. theaters in January 2026.
