‘Adolescence’ airs for free in UK schools, and the Prime Minister explains why he chose the Netflix series: “It deeply moved me”
Keir Starmer believes the hit series is a perfect tool for helping parents understand how young people communicate both on the streets and online.

Just over two weeks since its premiere, ’Adolescence’ continues to dominate conversations. This critically acclaimed Netflix series, already hailed as one of the best of 2025, has become a true phenomenon. Beyond its commercial success, it’s a work that transcends the screen, for better or worse. The British government has started a curious action with it, as they see the series as having a potentially positive societal impact.
So much so that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer proudly confirmed that ’Adolescence’ is being shown for free in schools. During a roundtable with representatives from various charities, Starmer explained, “This is an important initiative to encourage as many students as possible to watch it and openly discuss the changes they’re experiencing and how they communicate with each other.” He emphasized that it’s a valuable way to “address contemporary challenges and tackle negative influences.”
The Prime Minister also shared his personal experience watching ’Adolescence’ on Netflix: “As a father, watching this show with my teenage son and daughter, I can tell you - it hit home hard,” He added that policymakers cannot legislate on such matters lightly without truly understanding what’s on young people’s minds. “Only by listening to and learning from their experiences can we address all the issues raised by this groundbreaking series.”
What is ‘Adolescence’ about?
The Netflix series consists of just four episodes and follows Jamie, a 13-year-old boy accused of murder. It explores themes such as toxic masculinity, sexual violence, bullying, and how young people behave on social media, as well as its negative effects. Each episode is a powerful story told in a single continuous shot.
