The true crime that inspired the drama Adolescence, Netflix’s latest hit

The show of the moment and a strikingly real reflection of society.

One of the biggest surprises and successes on television this year is Adolescence, the British Netflix drama presented as a four-episode miniseries. It stands out for the themes it tackles and the way it approaches them, as well as its flawless technical execution and outstanding performances by its cast. A production with everything it takes to become a classic, telling a story so raw and real that many are left wondering: Did it actually happen? The answer is no, but it was inspired by a real crime.

The story of Adolescence stemmed from a personal experience of actor Stephen Graham, who plays the father in the series. He shared that while reading a newspaper, he came across an article about a boy who had committed a crime against a girl. As a parent, the incident moved him deeply, leading him to ask himself: “What is happening with young people in today’s society?”

A series that leaves a powerful impact

This reflection led to the creation of Adolescence, a series unique in its form and an unflinching mirror of many current societal issues.

MeriStation’s review of the show emphasizes that Adolescence “has everything it takes to become a classic series: a compelling story, an incredible script, masterful direction, and an outstanding cast. On top of that, it tells a timely story addressing topics like the normalization of sexual violence, sexism, the harm caused by social media, bullying, the loss of values in society, parent-child relationships, and the decline of education. All of this is delivered with a realism that hits the audience hard, leaving more questions than answers.”
