After 007: First Light’s success, Amazon MGM has not ruled out an IO Interactive James Bond sequel

Despite owning the IP, Amazon signals continued collaboration may be possible.

Update:

007: First Light has been a resounding success. It has received high ratings and achieved the best sales figures ever for its developer, IO Interactive, just one week after its release. Despite initial comments, Amazon Game Studios has not ruled out the possibility that the Danish studio might continue to pursue its vision for the 007 franchise.

Initially, Jeff Gattis, GM of gaming at Amazon, mentioned in an interview with Polygon that Amazon Game Studios might continue the work initially done by IO Interactive. In that interview, he noted that this is primarily due to the game’s development process from its inception; now it would be MGM and, theoretically, Amazon Game Studios that would develop the sequels to 007 First Light. “We did not [make First Light]. We do have a stake in it because we now own the IP,” Gattis explains, “but that IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done.”

However, Amazon MGM officially released a statement regarding its relationship with 007 First Light, noting that it has not ruled out the possibility of IO Interactive remaining involved with the franchise. “Amazon MGM holds the rights to any future James Bond video games, but it is still too early to discuss future projects,” it said. “We have a great relationship with IO Interactive and are proud of what we’ve accomplished together on 007 First Light. Our partners at IO will reveal more about 007 First Light in the near future, and we’re looking forward to sharing what’s next.”

It was in early 2025 that the James Bond franchise was shaken up. Amazon MGM Studios purchased Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson’s active stake in the production side of the franchise, though they remained co-owners of the intellectual property—without, however, any say in creative decisions. For now, the future of 007 on the big screen seems distant. Although a director and screenwriter have already been secured, the most important piece is still missing: the actor tasked with bringing James Bond to life. And while the search has formally begun, the process of seeing the classic intro with the barrel-gun and the agent in a tuxedo again seems far off.
