Akira Toriyama Disney

Akira Toriyama, creator of works as influential as ‘Dragon Ball’ and ‘Dr. Slump’, was a big fan of Disney. And it was thanks to the Walt Disney Company’s classic animated films that Toriyama began to be interested in the art of drawing and illustration, especially since he had the opportunity to enjoy the animated film ‘101 Dalmatians’ in 1961. Now, fans have recovered a piece of art made by Toriyama himself with which he celebrated Disney’s 70th anniversary in 1998, an amazing drawing starring Mickey and Minnie.

Toriyama always had an interest in all kinds of cinema and television, both from the main Asian countries and from Europe and America. Many influences have been noticeable in the works of the creator of Goku, from superheroes to ‘Star Wars’. Although Disney also played an important role in Toriyama’s development as an illustrator.

That is why in 1998 he did not hesitate to complete an illustration that you can see above these lines and that is not very well known. In this way, Toriyama wanted to celebrate a date as important as Disney’s 70th anniversary with an interpretation of the two main characters of the company under his particular style. You can see both Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse aboard a stylish vehicle reminiscent of a hot rod from the 50s.

Let’s remember that Toriyama was always a great fan of cars, motorcycles, and all kinds of means of transportation, so whenever he could he included them in his illustrations or stories, as is the case with the first arcs of ‘Dragon Ball’. And in his particular tribute to Disney, he could not miss this nod to the American culture of the time.
