Apple TV+ has launched ‘Murderbot’, a sci-fi thriller with comedic elements, created by Chris and Paul Weitz, the filmmakers behind ’American Pie’.

The series is based on Martha Wells’ award-winning book series, ’The Murderbot Diaries’, which won Hugo and Nebula Awards. However, the TV adaptation does not follow the books exactly.

A rebellious AI with a mind of its own

The official synopsis describes ‘Murderbot as follows:

“In a futuristic world, a rogue security robot secretly gains free will. To avoid suspicion, it reluctantly joins a new mission: protecting scientists on a dangerous planet… even though all it really wants to do is watch soap operas.”

The show features a star-studded cast, including:

  • Alexander Skarsgård (’Big Little Lies’, ‘Succession’)
  • David Dastmalchian (’Dune’, ‘The Suicide Squad’)
  • Noma Dumezweni (’The Undoing’, ‘The Little Mermaid’)

How does ‘Murderbot’ compare to ‘Black Mirror’?

While ’Black Mirror’ explores dark, dystopian themes, ‘Murderbot’ takes a lighter, more humorous approach to AI and technology. The series balances suspense with comedy, making it feel both classic and refreshingly new.

Where to watch ‘Murderbot‘?

The series premiered on May 16, 2025, with two episodes available now. New episodes will be released every Friday until July 11, 2025.

You can watch ‘Murderbot’ exclusively on Apple TV+.
