Apple WWDC 2026 recap: Siri AI is introduced and a major software overhaul across iOS 27 and macOS 27
Tim Cook delivers his final keynote before he steps down in September.
The 2026 edition of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), held on June 8 at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, will be remembered as a defining moment in the company’s history. Branded under the evocative tagline “All systems glow,” the keynote showed Apple’s most decisive leap yet into large-scale artificial intelligence integration. At the same time, it marked the end of an era. This WWDC was the final keynote presentation delivered by Tim Cook as Chief Executive Officer. Cook is set to step down in September, handing leadership to John Ternus, Apple’s current Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. While the transition signals a new chapter for the company, Cook’s farewell offering is one of the most ambitious software overhauls Apple has ever unveiled. Headlining the event were iOS 27, macOS 27, and iPadOS 27, accompanied by a complete reinvention of Apple’s voice assistant, now officially rebranded as Siri AI.
iOS 27, macOS 27, and iPadOS 27: what’s new?
Apple started with their OS. Building on last year’s Liquid Glass design language, iOS 27 and macOS 27 introduce improved readability through enhanced light diffusion and a new transparency slider. Under the hood, Apple positioned this release as a major stability-focused update—frequently compared to the legacy of Snow Leopard. The emphasis is on improved battery life, faster performance on Apple Silicon, and reduced interface inconsistencies.
The Photos app introduces on-device AI editing tools—Extend, Reframe, and Enhance—designed to rescue imperfect shots and refine favorite memories. Wallet adds long-requested bill-splitting tools and a simplified Create a Pass feature, while Weather introduces a more detailed Conditions panel. Safari, meanwhile, leverages Apple Intelligence to monitor tabs in the background, notify users of webpage changes, and even proactively rotate compromised passwords via the Passwords app.
Apple reinforced its privacy-first philosophy with an expanded Communication Safety system, now operating across the entire ecosystem. The feature prevents children and teens from viewing shared images or videos containing nudity, graphic violence, or other sensitive material—providing parents with a system-level layer of protection.
The Arrival of Siri AI
Apple’s most consequential announcement centered squarely on artificial intelligence, transforming Siri from a basic voice command tool into a full-fledged AI companion. Internally developed under the codename Campo, Siri AI represents a foundational shift in how users interact with their devices. This evolution is powered in part by a strategic partnership with Google, leveraging the Gemini AI model to handle complex backend processing. Siri AI can now analyze information across the entire Apple ecosystem—emails, calendars, contacts, and notes—to draft messages, coordinate schedules, or answer contextual questions without requiring users to open individual apps.
iOS 27 introduces a major shift in navigation with the new Search or Ask interface. The familiar swipe-down gesture from the top center of the screen now opens a typing-first AI hub designed to centralize nearly all interactions. Notifications move to a top-left swipe, clearing space for a panel that can launch apps, execute shortcuts, search the web, or route queries directly to an AI chatbot. Crucially, Apple is embracing flexibility. Users can natively switch between third-party AI models—including ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini—directly within the interface. The panel also surfaces Siri Suggestions, recently used apps, and contextual data such as real-time weather, effectively turning the screen into an intelligent, adaptive dashboard.

Apple is also introducing a standalone Siri app across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The app features a chat-style interface, iCloud synchronization, photo attachments, and auto-deleting conversations. Siri AI further gains access to Visual Intelligence, allowing it to identify locations from on-screen images and generate navigation guidance. Voice customization tools, including new pace and expressivity sliders, round out the update, making interactions feel more natural and personalized.
