Assassin’s Creed Shadows experiments with a new post-launch strategy: here’s how to play the expansion without paying more
Unlike Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla and Mirage, the next installment will not have a season pass.

The fact that Star Wars Outlaws did not meet Ubisoft’s sales expectations has prompted the French company to change its strategy. The truth is that this failure has contributed to weaken its delicate financial situation, so the company led by Yves Guillemot wants and must play all of its cards with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the new installment of its star saga. For years, Ubisoft has been betting on season passes, which usually contain expansions and other paid content. However, this title has ditched this business model and dispensed with early access.
The game has not yet been released, but Ubisoft has announced its first - and so far only - expansion. It is The Claws of Awaji, a content that will be available throughout 2025, but will not be part of any season pass. At this time there is still no information on whether the expansion will be sold separately, so as of today the only way to get ahold of it is to pre-order Assassin’s Creed Shadows in any of its editions (including the standard one).
What is Claws of Awaji about?
The official description of Claws of Awaji reads as follows: “Discover the next expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Travel to a new region full of beauty and mystery: the island of Awaji. Get your hands on a lost historical treasure while avoiding the traps and ambushes of new and lethal enemies. Feel the tension with a new faction on your heels and sowing chaos on the mysterious island of Awaji. Master the bō (a new weapon type for Naoe), unlock new skills, equipment and abilities, and get over ten hours of additional content.”
In addition to the expansion, those who pre-order the game will have the Thrown to the Dogs mission available to play from launch day. Assassin’s Creed Shadows will hit stores on March 20 on PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC.
