Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will work on Steam Deck in the end, says Ubisoft

Ubisoft had initially stated that the game wouldn’t run well on the handheld.

Assassin's Creed Shadows will run on Steam Deck.

Steam Deck users who want to play Assassin’s Creed Shadows are going to be able to do it in the end, Ubisoft said in a statement. After the initial announcement that the game would not be compatible with Valve’s portable device, Ubisoft rectified this for the pleasure of those who want to enjoy it on the go.

Back in February, during a tech interview, Ubisoft revealed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows would not be compatible with Steam Deck at launch, as it did not meet its minimum PC specs. This indicated that the problem wasn’t simply that the game didn’t meet the requirements to pass Valve’s verification process, but that it wouldn’t run properly on the device.

We are very close to travelling through Japan in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Ubisoft shared an update for the Steam Deck users, confirming that Valve’s device will be compatible with the release. While Ubisoft didn’t give any further details, it’s likely that they’ve managed to improve the game’s performance since its initial announcement, or as PC gamers say, “it just wasn’t optimized at first.”

Ubisoft also mentioned that they are still awaiting the results of Valve’s verification process, so it is unknown what compatibility rating Assassin’s Creed Shadows will receive on Steam Deck. Valve classifies games as Verified, Playable, Not Compatible, or Unknown on the device. Ubisoft promises to share more information on this topic soon.
