Bad news for nostalgic fans who wanted to use the GameCube controller with the Switch 2: Nintendo confirms restrictions

Nintendo will bring GameCube games to Switch Online with a new controller, but it will only support classic titles, not current games.

During the Nintendo Switch 2 presentation last week, one of the announcements that did not go unnoticed was the arrival of Nintendo GameCube games to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service. In addition to revealing some of the titles that will be available, a special GameCube controller was also unveiled that will allow gamers to relive the experience they had just over 20 years ago. However, there is one small limitation that few have noticed.

The limitations of the classic GameCube controller

In the trailer for Nintendo GameCube games, we were shown both the games that would be included and the arrival of the special controller to play them. However, in the trailer for the UK version, the small print changed and was very different from the American version. It mentions that “the controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube—Nintendo Classic,” limiting its use for other Nintendo titles.

This means that if you were planning on playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or any other Nintendo Switch 2 title with this controller, in theory, you won’t be able to. Again, this is nothing new, as this warning has appeared on dedicated controllers for previous consoles. However, despite this message, some controllers have been able to be used for other games, albeit with limitations.

On the other hand, it is worth mentioning that Nintendo also recently revealed that if you still have your Nintendo GameCube controller adapter that came out for the Wii U, you will still be able to use it on your Nintendo Switch 2. You just need to plug it into one of the USB ports on the console’s dock to use it.
