Baldur’s Gate 3: how many Acts are there, and how long do they take to beat?

We already knew that Baldur’s Gate 3 was a very long game, but how many Acts does it have and how much time will you actually put into it?

Update:
Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been having an incredible launch week, with thousands of players rushing into the game (to the point they almost broke the Steam servers)  ready for one of the biggest RPGs in the past few years. But just how big is it? With the game being divided into Acts, the question of game length has come back to the forefront. How many Acts are there and how long does it take to complete each one?

How long is Baldur’s Gate 3?

According to Larian Studios’ CEO and Baldur’s Gate 3 Creative Director Swen Vicke, players should be ready to spend anywhere from 75 to 100 hours to complete a full playthrough of the game. However, that is only applicable when dealing with just the main story of the game. If you’re exploring optional regions or doing as many sidequests as you can, you might be in it for over 200 hours.

As the game is also an epic adventure full of twists and turns, incredible voice acting, and amazing cinematic moments, the devs have also chosen to divide the game into three Acts. Following the most basics of structures in storytelling, you can see each of these as the Setup, the Confrontation, and the Resolution.

In the Setup, you’re presented with the basics of the world, your companions, a goal to complete and the motivation for your character to venture into the unknown. The Confrontation is where most of the action happens, with plot advancing and twists happening all around. This usually means that it can be the longest arc. The Resolution is typically where loose ends are connected and you reach the end of the story.

As such, in Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s no saying exactly how long each Act will take you to complete, as it depends on all of the content you decide to do. But here’s an estimate of each Act’s length:

  • Act 1 - 50 hours
  • Act 2 - 70 hours
  • Act 3 - between 40-50 hours

Baldur’s Gate 3 released on August 3 for PC. The PS5 version will be released in September, and as of this moment there is still no set date for a release on Xbox Series X|S.
