Be careful if you’re planning to use the original Switch HDMI cable on the Switch 2: Nintendo warns that you shouldn’t do it
If users want the best performance, the new cables are the way to go.

As the Nintendo Switch 2 prepares for its launch on June 5, 2025, Nintendo has issued a warning about accessory compatibility, specifically regarding the original Switch HDMI cable. While the older cable technically works with the new console, using it may result in suboptimal performance that could affect your gaming experience.
Why the original HDMI cable isn’t recommended
The HDMI cable included with the original Nintendo Switch uses HDMI 1.4 specifications, which limits output to 4K resolution at 30Hz. In contrast, the Switch 2 is designed to support HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 standards, enabling 4K resolution at 60Hz or higher for smoother visuals and better frame rates. Nintendo advises players to use the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable included with the Switch 2 to maximize performance.
What happens if you use the old cable?
While the original HDMI cable will still display content on your TV, it won’t take full advantage of the Switch 2’s capabilities. Gamers may notice lower frame rates and less fluid gameplay when using the older cable, especially on UHD displays. This could be a significant drawback for players looking to enjoy the enhanced graphics and performance promised by the new console.
Nintendo’s advice
Nintendo has updated its accessory compatibility page to clarify that the original HDMI cable is “not compatible” with the Switch 2. However, this phrasing has sparked some confusion, as the cable technically works but doesn’t deliver the optimal experience. To avoid any issues, Nintendo recommends sticking to the Switch 2 HDMI cable provided in the box.
If you’re planning to upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2, it’s worth ensuring that your setup includes the new HDMI cable. While the original cable might seem convenient, it could limit your ability to fully enjoy the console’s improved visuals and performance. For the best experience, follow Nintendo’s advice and use the accessories designed specifically for the Switch 2.
