Borderlands 4 price controversy: Randy Pitchford’s comments spark debate over $80 price tag
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford suggests that “real fans” will find a way to pay higher prices for games, reigniting discussions on gaming costs.

Video game price speculation is still fueling debates on social media: while some companies have already started to raise their prices, others remain a mystery, and players fear having to pay more to play their favorite releases. On May 14, 2025, Randy Pitchford responded to a user on X (formerly Twitter) who expressed concerns about Borderlands 4 potentially costing $80. Pitchford replied:
“A) Not my call. B) If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen.”
He then shared a personal anecdote, recalling how he saved money from his minimum-wage job at an ice cream shop in 1991 to buy Starflight for $80.
Backlash from the gaming community
Pitchford’s comments were widely criticized, with many arguing that:
- Gaming prices have risen disproportionately compared to wages.
- Economic conditions today are far more challenging than in 1991.
- His statement felt out of touch, implying that financial struggles shouldn’t be a barrier for “true fans”.
Some users compared his remarks to Ken Kutaragi’s infamous statement during the PS3 launch, when he suggested that fans should work extra hours to afford the console.
Will Borderlands 4 actually cost $80?
Despite the controversy, Gearbox has not confirmed the price of Borderlands 4. Pitchford later clarified at PAX East that he doesn’t know the final price, but acknowledged that game budgets are increasing, leading to higher costs.
With Nintendo Switch 2 pricing Mario Kart World at $89.99, and Microsoft raising Xbox game prices, the industry appears to be moving toward higher price points.
Borderlands 4 release date
Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 12, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
