Borderlands 4 reveals endgame overhaul and post-launch roadmap at PAX West
The next Borderlands adventure promises scalable challenges, weekly activities, and a robust mix of free and paid DLC.
At a recent presentation during PAX West the first details aorund Borderlands 4 endgame and post-launch content roadmap were presented. And it will keep players engaged long after the main story concludes on the new planet of Kairos
A More Player-Friendly Endgame
The core of the endgame experience is a completely reimagined Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. Unlike previous entries—where players had to re-farm gear and replay the entire campaign—the new system is designed to be more accessible. Players will now progress through five unlockable difficulty levels by completing curated mission challenges. This approach ensures that difficulty scales to a player’s build and playstyle, offering fresh challenges without the repetitive grind. Each rank of Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode also rewards players with exclusive Firmware, powerful set bonuses that can be transferred once to another item to further enhance their loadouts.
Beyond the main progression loop, Borderlands 4 will feature a variety of rewarding activities. Weekly Wildcards will introduce rotating missions with guaranteed Legendary rewards, while Moxxi’s Big Encore will spotlight a different boss each week for a bigger challenge and higher-tier loot. In addition, Maurice’s Black Market Machine will send players on global scavenger hunts for unique gear. All these activities are designed with online matchmaking in mind.
A Look at the Post-Launch Roadmap
The developers also outlined a comprehensive post-launch plan, including both paid and free content. The paid DLC is split into two types: Story Packs and Bounty Packs. The first of the two announced Story Packs is titled Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned. This cosmic horror-themed expansion will bring back the fan-favorite character Ellie and introduce a new playable Vault Hunter, a new region to explore on Kairos, and a fresh set of legendary gear and cosmetics.
Meanwhile, Bounty Packs will provide smaller, narrative-driven missions that expand on the stories of supporting characters. The first Bounty Pack focuses on Rush, leader of the Outbounders, and includes new missions, a new boss, and a Vault Card packed with 24 cosmetic items and four pieces of gear. Free updates will also roll out regularly to keep players engaged.
Borderlands 4 is just around the corner, launching on September 12, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and on October 3, 2025, on Nintendo Switch 2.
