Clair Obscur: Expedition 60 – The powerful team that went beyond the Paintress and still failed
They fought harder than anyone before them, but fate was stronger.

Expedition 60 was one of the most legendary teams to ever challenge the Monolith in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, pushing past barriers that had stopped countless others. Unlike previous expeditions, they believed that raw human strength was the key to overcoming the Paintress. Their unorthodox approach allowed them to breach the Monolith’s defenses, but despite their incredible power, their mission ended in failure.

How did Expedition 60 reach the Paintress?
Unlike other teams that relied on technology, strategy, or magic, Expedition 60 believed in the supremacy of the human body. Led by Leslie, their training regimen focused on peak physical performance, allowing them to charge through the Monolith’s ghostly barrier without the usual constraints.
Their journal entry describes their unmatched agility and strength, stating:
“We are SO much more agile and aerodynamic without the heavy uniforms constraining our glorious muscles. Bare naked muscles will save the world!”
This unconventional approach allowed them to reach the Paintress, something few expeditions had ever accomplished.
The failed escape: The expedition member who tried to swim back
One of Expedition 60’s most pivotal moments came when William, realizing the true threat was deeper within the Monolith, attempted to return to Lumière by swimming. His journal hints at his desperation:“One last swim separates me from Lumière, but even with my mighty muscles, I don’t know if I can outswim the Gommage.”
His fate remains uncertain: did he reach Lumière to warn them, or was he lost to the depths like so many before him? His attempt to defy the cycle and escape by swimming is one of the greatest mysteries of Expedition 60.
Why did they fail?
Despite their unbelievable physical prowess, Expedition 60 misunderstood the true nature of the Paintress. They believed she was the ultimate enemy, but upon reaching her, they discovered that she was just as trapped as they were.
The real threat lay beneath the Monolith, and as the rest of Expedition 60 marched forward to confront it, they were erased—their strength proving useless against the deeper horrors lurking within.
Expedition 60’s bold approach allowed them to go further than most, but their misplaced focus led to their downfall. Their failure serves as a cautionary tale, proving that brute strength alone is not enough to overcome the mysteries of the Monolith.
