Craig Mazin insists on expanding The Last of Us series: there’s “quite a bit of story to tell”
The co-creator of the TV adaptation of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed saga confirms that they will be making more than one new season to bring the sequel to the small screen.
The first season of The Last of Us, the acclaimed HBO Max series that adapts the first installment of Naughty Dog’s video game franchise, ended a little over a month ago to great critical and popular acclaim. In addition to faithfully adapting the original material to the point of copying scenes, shots and dialogue, its creators opted to expand the story through the prism of television.
With the second season already confirmed by its producers, it is expected that the next episodes will adapt the sequel, albeit in a more measured way and delving into other aspects that the video game, for one reason or another, does not cover. Craig Mazin, co-creator of the series with Neil Druckmann, now insists that the second video game will need more than one season to tell everything as it should.

Mazin himself assured this again during the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas, as there is “quite a bit of story to tell,” according to the director. So reports Deadline, which adds that “our plan is to do it not just for one more season,” he said. “We should be around for a while,” insisted the showrunner of the series. And the fact is that the intention to tell the sequel in more than one season of the series was already commented some time ago by those who ran it; now it seems that they have made it clearer than ever.
Of course, as he said a few months ago, the goal is not to extend the story any longer than necessary, as other series that have adapted original material to the television format have done: “We have no plans to tell a story beyond the adaptation of the video games. We won’t run into the same issue as Game of Thrones since Part II doesn’t end on a cliffhanger,” Druckmann said in January this year, citing the ending of The Last of Us: Part II.
We will have to wait until the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025 to see to what extent these statements are true and whether we will see sooner rather than later (or not) the most brutal and dark scene of the second game, which gives rise to its revenge story.
