Creator of ‘Adolescence’ responds to Elon Musk’s claims of “anti-white propaganda” in the series
Writer Jack Thorne confronts the “absurd” misinformation spread by certain corners of social media.

‘Adolescence’, Netflix’s latest global phenomenon breaking multiple records, has become a hot topic—for better or worse. So much so that its co-creator, writer Jack Thorne, felt compelled to address an “absurd” controversy sparked by Elon Musk on X, where he implied that the Netflix miniseries promotes “anti-white propaganda.” Thorne has called out these practices, which aim to misinform and fuel completely false narratives.
Elon Musk amplifying misinformation?
Thorne, who co-created ’Adolescence’ alongside Stephen Graham -the actor portraying Jamie’s father in the series-, responded to the controversy circulating on X, accusing the show of being “anti-white propaganda.” This opinion, amplified by none other than Elon Musk, gained significant traction on social media.
One claim shared on X alleged that the protagonist of ’Adolescence’ was originally a Black child, a notion Thorne dismissed as “absurd.” He also refuted the claim that most teenage attacks in the UK are committed by Black children. Speaking on the podcast The News Agents, Thorne clarified that race is entirely irrelevant to the series’ themes, which focus on a completely different issue:
“This isn’t about race. It’s about masculinity. We’re addressing a problem. We’re not saying it’s one thing or another. We’re saying it’s about boys,” Thorne explained. He emphasized that the series aims to highlight the challenges faced by teenagers and the harmful influences that can lead to far more serious actions. Race and social status, he stressed, have nothing to do with it.

A post shared by Musk on X stated: “Netflix has a show called ’Adolescence’ that’s about a British knife killer who stabbed a girl to death on a bus.” But where does the supposed bus come from? The post continued: “And it’s based on real life cases such as the Southport murderer. So guess what. They race swapped the actual killer from a black man/migrant to a white boy and the story has it so he was radicalized online by the red pill movement. Just the absolute state of anti-white propaganda.”
