Crunchyroll to finally allow user profile creation later this month

Customizable avatars, parental controls, customizable recommendations, and more will be coming to Crunchyroll by the end of April 2024.

Update:
Crunchyroll to finally allow user profile creation later this month

One of the most anticipated features by Crunchyroll users will finally be available. After almost 11 years, the service will allow the creation of different user profiles, which will be available by the end of April 2024, to better organize how its users can watch anime.

Profiles coming to Crunchyroll

In a post on its official blog, Crunchyroll revealed the upcoming arrival of this feature, which will allow users to create up to five profiles in a single household. It will allow users to choose their own avatars from 30 different anime. In addition, premium users will have access to parental controls and a more personalized recommendation called Crunchylist. Finally, this change will allow users to stream content at the same time, although there is currently no mention of whether there will be any kind of penalty if they are not in the same household, as has happened with other streaming services in recent years.

This change comes just one day after Funimation shut down its services following the announced merger with Crunchyroll in 2021. In a press release and an email sent to all subscribers, Funimation announced the end of its services on April 2, 2024, as a result of its acquisition by Crunchyroll. Not only that, but all content users have purchased from Funimation will disappear forever because it is “incompatible” with Crunchyroll.

This last aspect led Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll, to announce that the company is already working on a solution that could compensate users for their lost content.

For now, if multiple users in a household have paid separately for their Crunchyroll premium accounts, there will be no way to merge them into one, so they will have to decide which user will be the main one and recreate their watchlist under a new profile.
