Update:

Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 came to an end this week. And the finale took an unexpected turn—one that showrunner Dario Scardapane has revealed cannot be undone.

Warning! Spoilers for ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 follow:

The season ends just as Brian Michael Bendis’s run with the character does: Daredevil’s true identity is now known to everyone, and Matt Murdock ends up in prison. However, while in the comics he was completely distraught and unhinged, in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ he ends up behind bars, resigned and accepting that this is the fate he must endure so that New York can finally find peace. The ending is the same for Wilson Fisk, so the rumors about which work the third season would be based on, rather than gaining momentum, seem to be confirmed.

Scardapane discussed this topic alongside Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum on the ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ podcast on Disney+; they revealed that Matt Murdock’s identity is something the people of New York will know, and that this decision had to be approved by the top brass at Marvel Studios.

Kevin [Faige] and Lou [D’Esposito] are amazing storytellers, you don’t build the MCU if you’re not some of the greatest of all time, and very quickly they saw it was where the story needed to go,” said Winderbaum. “And, of course, we could point to the comics. So as soon as you could point to the source material and show how it plays out and all the stories that are able to be told after the reveal of the identity, it becomes an easier argument to make.

We’re not doing buybacks. If you’re taking that step, now everyone in the city knows Matt is Daredevil, which changes the storytelling in Season 3 in such a cool way,” Scardapane said after referencing how Purple Man resets Matt Murdock’s big reveal in the 2017 comic. “Having been in and around the Netflix show, the thing everyone was talking about was, ‘How do we change things up next time?,’ And I feel that Marvel has been really good about not reiterating.”

Beyond the identity crisis, Season 3 will continue the redemption arc of former task force officer Cole North and introduce Heather Glenn as Lady Muse. While filming leaks have already shown a bearded Wilson Fisk, the showrunner suggests that the finale of Season 2 has already “tipped the hand” for what’s coming. Despite rumors of Daredevil appearing in other MCU projects like ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ or ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ actor Charlie Cox has maintained that he will not be appearing in those films.
