Expedition 33 is so good that even the President of France praises it: “A shining example of French audacity”
Emmanuel Macron congratulates Sandfall Interactive on the game’s overwhelming success.

In less than a week, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has surpassed one million copies sold, received outstanding reviews across all platforms (holding a Metacritic score above 90), and generated so much excitement that even French President Emmanuel Macron publicly praised its creators.
Macron’s message, posted on Instagram, was a response to a celebratory post from Sandfall Interactive, where the studio thanked players for their support. The post highlighted the game’s global reception and expressed pride in its French cultural roots, drawing inspiration from La Belle Époque for its fantasy world design.
“A million copies and, today, one of the best-rated games in history: and yes, it’s French! Congratulations to Sandfall Interactive and all the creators of Expedition 33. You are a shining example of French audacity and creativity,” Macron wrote.
A serious contender for Game of the Year
Since its April 24 release, the RPG has continued to impress. Its turn-based combat, combined with a parry mechanic, keeps players engaged, while its art direction evokes a surrealist masterpiece.
The story follows a group of expeditioners determined to end the cycle of death imposed by a mysterious figure known as The Paintress.
Even more impressive, the sales figures do not account for players enjoying the game through Game Pass on Xbox and PC, suggesting its true impact is even greater.
With such a strong debut, Sandfall Interactive has not only cemented itself as a leading French developer but has also made Expedition 33 one of the biggest gaming phenomena of the year.
