Farewell to Wonder Woman: Warner Bros. Games announces closures and cancellations
The restructuring affects Monolith Productions and Player First Games, creators of Multiversus.

The video game industry is having another bad afternoon with another round of layoffs and the closing of three studios by Warner Bros. Games. Among the affected studios are Monolith Productions, developers of the long-awaited Wonder Woman game, and Player First Games, creators of the popular Multiversus. The information comes from renowned journalist Jason Schreier, who reported the closure via Bloomberg.
Wonder Woman cancellation, a big blow for fans
The Wonder Woman video game, announced at The Game Awards 2021, was one of the most anticipated titles for DC fans, despite reports of problems in its development in recent weeks. Monolith Productions, known for its work on 'Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor' and ‘Shadows of War’, had high hopes for this project, but it will not see the light of day.
In a statement sent to Kotaku, Warner Bros. Games explained the reasons behind the drastic decision:
“After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios - Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them. The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game will not move forward,” Warner Bros. continued. “Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the ionic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible with our strategic priorities. This is another tough decision, as we recognise Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games.”
Farewell to Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego
Player First Games, the studio responsible for Multiversus, is also saying goodbye following the announcement of the game’s cancellation. Despite a successful launch, the crossover fighting title, which brought together characters from iconic Warner Bros. franchises, was unable to hold the public’s interest in the long term. In addition, Warner Bros. Games San Diego, known for its support of various internal projects and its foray into developing titles for mobile devices, was also affected.
With this new strategy, Warner Bros. Games aims to focus its efforts on key franchises such as Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones, and to closing studios and projects that do not fit with its new business vision.
