Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth does not require Final Fantasy 7 Remake to be played first

Square Enix states that they have taken steps to ensure everyone can enjoy the sequel, although they do not confirm whether they will include a summary.

Is an announcement for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth imminent? Nothing is certain yet, but Square Enix has posted a series of informative updates on social media over the past few days, providing small clues about the title’s development. Three years after the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, the sequel is in full development, but will we have to play the first game to enjoy the second? According to the Japanese, no:

“No, we have made preparations so that players who did not get a chance to play the first game can fully enjoy Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,” said Motomu Toriyama, the game’s co-director.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth development on track: release date already set

Yoshinori Kitase, producer, confirmed that work is progressing well: “Development is progressing smoothly and according to plan. We are currently working on nailing down a release date for the game.” Director Naoki Hamaguchi also explained that players will be able to freely travel around a huge world while experiencing “a variety of different stories” along the way.

Cloud, Aeris, Tifa, Red XIII... the fate of the protagonists depends on what happens in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, planned exclusively for PS5. The remake project will conclude with a final installment that will complete the trilogy. Unlike other remakes, these titles are more of a reimagining, so Square Enix has made plot changes that they will continue to explore.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is available on PS4; the next-gen version, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, is playable on both PS5 and PC and features certain graphical and performance enhancements, as well as the Yuffie-exclusive Intermission expansion.
