Final Fantasy XVI Producer Sets Social Media On Fire: “I wish there was only one [game platform]”

When someone starts a sentence with something like “I shouldn’t say that,” they’re about to leave us with statements that are bound to cause controversy. Such was the case with Naoki Yoshida, better known as Yoshi-P. The producer of Final Fantasy XVI, and the main culprit behind the success of Final Fantasy XIV, took part in a YouTube program and surprised everyone with his thoughts about the existence of different video game platforms: “Game Platforms... I probably shouldn’t say this, but I wish there was only one,” Yoshida said. “It would be better for both developers and players.”

Considering that Final Fantasy XVI is exclusive to PS5 in terms of consoles, you might think that his statements are an attack on Xbox, but it is not, because the only reason why Yoshi-P wants there to be only one platform serves the purpose of convenience. On one hand, there are developers who would only have to work on one version of the game. On the other hand, the players, would not have to spend a lot of money on several different systems.

Does Final Fantasy XVI retain the essence of the franchise?

With a score of 87 on Metacritic from the press and an 82 from users, Final Fantasy XVI has not been able to escape comparisons to previous installments and has been the protagonist of countless debates about the past, present, and future of Square Enix’s saga. In Meristation USA review, Mike Reyes himself came to this conclusion:  “From its evolution of a long-established franchise to something completely new and exciting, to the care its devs have had to the most minute aspects of the title, this game squeezes every ounce of performance from the PlayStation 5′s next-gen hardware, optimized and perfected as much as possible to create an astonishing experience.”
