From the Oscars to Raccoon City: ‘Anora’ star eyes new ‘Resident Evil’ reboot

Fans hold out hope as the project lands an acclaimed horror director.

Mikey Madison Resident Evil

Unsurprisingly, winning the Oscar for Best Actress in ’Anora’ has catapulted young Mikey Madison into the spotlight, putting her on the radar of numerous productions, including rumors linking her to the MCU, potentially as a young mutant character. Meanwhile, Capcom’s beloved Resident Evil saga is gearing up for a new reboot, one that fans hope will finally stay true to the games. Young actor Austin Abrams (Euphoria) has reportedly received an offer to star as the lead, and discussions are underway with Madison to join as the female protagonist, though this doesn’t necessarily mean she’ll play familiar characters like Claire Redfield or Jill Valentine.

According to a leaked synopsis, Abrams will portray a courier trapped in a hospital amidst the chaos engulfing Raccoon City. This suggests the movie won’t focus on the established protagonists but rather on ordinary characters fighting to survive. The setting also appears to depart from familiar locations like the city itself or Spencer Mansion, raising concerns among fans that this production may stray from the saga’s roots. On the bright side, the film will be helmed by Zach Cregger, a director with a strong track record in horror thanks to successful films like ‘Barbarian’ and ‘The Assistant’.

Resident Evil’s history of troubled live-action adaptations

The Resident Evil saga hasn’t been particularly lucky with its live-action adaptations. It began in 2002 with a film starring Milla Jovovich that, while taking some liberties, was relatively well-received by fans. However, the series soon evolved into action-heavy popcorn flicks, culminating in six films, the last being Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in 2016.

In 2021, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City attempted a reboot but was harshly criticized for the actors’ lack of resemblance to their characters and, simply put, for not being a good movie. Unfortunately, things only worsened with the 2022 Netflix series starring Ella Balinska and the late Lance Reddick, which was canceled after a lackluster first season
