‘Game of Thrones’ will have a spin-off starring Aegon the Conqueror and this is his story
He conquered the kingdoms of Westeros and established the monarchical dynasty that ruled the Seven Kingdoms for 300 years after the conquest.
Anyone can guess the end of this story just by reading the character’s honorific. Aegon is the ancestor of all the Targaryen kings and queens who ruled Westeros until the family’s fall from grace when Robert Baratheon and his allies betrayed the monarch and overthrew the Dragon Dynasty, which was nearly wiped out. In ‘House of the Dragon,’ the first Game of Thrones spin-off, we delve into one of the bloodiest internecine wars, that of the Targaryens, who fought among themselves to determine who would sit on the Iron Throne. The same throne that Aegon built as a symbol of his power.
The story of Aegon Targaryen is told in ‘Fire and Blood,’ the novel by George R.R. Martin on which ‘House of the Dragon’ is based. However, HBO will create a new spin-off focusing on the conquest of the Seven Kingdoms. The son of Lord Aerion Targaryen and Valaena Velaryon, he spent his childhood on Dragonstone and married his two sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys. He rode a legendary dragon, a beast known as Balerion the Black Dread. The reptile survived for many years, and its last rider was Viserys Targaryen, Rhaenyra’s father in the HBO series Max.
Aegon, the first of his name
The war began when Aegon refused to marry the Storm King’s daughter. The monarch’s furious response led to a masterstroke by the Targaryen contender, who crowned himself sole king of Westeros. In this first phase of the war, the Conqueror attacked Harren the Black, King of the Iron Islands and the Riverlands. The fire consumed him and his family, and Vickon Greyjoy chose to surrender and bend his knee. From then on, the various leaders fell or joined the cause, except Dorne, which put up a determined fight. It was not until some time later that a peace treaty was finally signed.
Knowing what might happen, Oldtown surrendered and the High Septon anointed Aegon the Conqueror as the first of his name, King of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm. Using the fire of Balerion and the swords of fallen enemies, the Sovereign melted the swords and erected the Iron Throne. King’s Landing was chosen as the new capital, where the Red Keep was built (not completed until his son Maegor became king).
House of the Dragon’s season two premieres this summer on Max.
