Update:

Throughout Marvel’s history, there have been many inseparable (or almost inseparable) couples: Reed Richards and Sue Storm, Scarlet Witch and Vision, Cloak and Dagger... But one of the most iconic, Peter Parker (Spider-Man) and Mary Jane Watson, seems destined not to come to fruition. Interestingly, one of those who has spoken out against Marvel’s habit of not letting them be happy together is George R. R. Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

“I like Spider-Man. I like that there’s hundreds and hundreds of ‘Spider-Man’ comics, and not just six,” the writer said in a podcast. “I have frustrations with it, too, I have to admit. I sometimes... I don’t like retcons. I don’t like reboots. You know, I’m watching, I’m following a character or a superhero or something for years, sometimes decades, and then they come and say, ‘Oh, no. None of that stuff actually happened. We’re just gonna start the whole thing all over again.’ That always annoys the hell out of me.”

Peter Parker married Mary Jane. [...] You can’t undo these things, but they do nowadays. But what can you do?” Martin concludes.

The event that angered Martin and millions of fans

Indeed, Peter and Mary Jane did get married, although in 2007, Marvel got its wires crossed in the 'One More Day' arc. In it, in exchange for saving Aunt May’s life, Mephisto asks both of them for nothing less than their marriage, but it’s not as simple as a mere divorce: it broke with 20 years of continuity for the wall-crawler, in an event that became known as the “Mephistophelis,” and which still reverberates today as one of the most controversial in Marvel’s recent history.
